LISA LESLIE BACKS UNION, BUT NOT UNION REP, IN INTERVIEW

The NBPA was certified on Friday as the exclusive
bargaining rep of the WNBA players (Mult., 11/14). The
unionization was discussed during Lifetime's coverage of the
"Nike Four In The Fall" college basketball tournament over
the weekend. The Sparks' Lisa Leslie: "I think it's very
important for us to get a union." But Lifetime's Mary
Murphy said, "I think there's some issues that they can take
care of with the Union. But, at the same time, I don't
think it's a good idea. It's like a bunch of kids
unionizing against their parents. All you can do is stomp
your feet. What are you going to do?" USA Today's
Christine Brennan: "And the timing was awful. Women can
capitalize on the men's mistake. Here, the men are locked
out, you've got a great opportunity for the women to capture
that male audience. And they go and join and do the same
thing." Leslie: "I didn't say that we chose the right
Union. But we did need a Union" (Lifetime, 11/13).
