SPURS ARENA PLAN IN JEOPARDY OVER FINANCING PLAN

North East School District Officials in San Antonio
"threatened ... to pull out of all talks" with the Spurs
over the financing of a new arena, which would "effectively
kill any deal," according to Christopher Anderson of the SAN
ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. School leaders were "alarmed over"
how much property tax revenue they would have to "sacrifice
to the project." But a Spurs exec said that the team would
be "willing to give up some of the money generated" if the
$156M arena is built. Spurs Exec VP Leo Gomez: "The
district has some needs and there's a price tag attached to
that. That price tag is going to have to be taken care of
somewhere." School leaders also "demanded" that the Spurs
come up with enough money "to offset the district's
projected losses of more than" $100M over 25 years. North
East School District Superintendent Richard Middleton:
"We're not committed to losing money. If there's no plan,
... we are out of it." But Gomez said the school district's
is "claiming money they don't have" (EXPRESS-NEWS, 11/12).
