LEAGUE NOTES

CART/IRL NEWS: CART President & CEO Andrew Craig said
that Sunday's Indianapolis Star-News report that CART engine
manufacturers had made a proposal to the IRL "is incorrect.
As far as the current state of negotiations, that story was
overstated." In L.A., Shav Glick reports that the "rumored
plans" call for both IRL and CART to continue with their
individual circuits and meet at the Indy 500, "something
like motor racing's Super Bowl" (L.A. TIMES, 11/10).
MLB: In N.Y., Thomas Hill reports that MLB, MLBPA and
Japan execs "conducted meetings during the past week aimed
at staging major-league games in Tokyo as soon as 2000."
Under one plan, two teams would open their seasons at the
Tokyo Dome. MLB players are currently touring Japan and
"the current tour's success has bolstered enthusiasm for
staging games in" that country (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/10).
NOTES: In N.Y., Mike Freeman reported that the NFL and
NFLPA last week finalized a CBA players and owners ratified
earlier this year, which runs through the 2003 season (N.Y.
TIMES, 11/8)....The national women's volleyball teams of
Italy, Brazil, Russia, Bulgaria and Croatia were fined
$3,000 for not wearing new playing suits that the "players
have decried as too sexy" at the FIVB World Championship in
Tokyo (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 11/7)....The four-team MD Fall
Baseball League drew 57,823 fans to 66 home dates, averaging
876 per game. League President Keith Lupton said that MLB,
NAPBL and Orioles execs will make a joint decision on the
future of the league (WASHINGTON POST, 11/7).
