DOUBLES FAULT: WOMEN'S EXHIBITION TENNIS MATCH CANCELED

A $300,000 women's doubles exhibition match slated for
November 27 at the National Car Rental Center in Sunrise,
FL, which was to feature Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf
against Jana Novotna and Anna Kournikova, was canceled
"because its sponsor withdrew support, blaming fluctuations
in the stock market," according to Meri-Jo Borzilleri of the
MIAMI HERALD. The cancellation was "greeted with little
surprise by industry insiders" because of the amount of the
purse, which was "a record offered for a women's doubles
exhibition," according to the event's promoter George Liddy.
Liddy wouldn't name the sponsor. Borzilleri: "What's
puzzling is why the event was promoted in the first place if
the deal with the sponsor wasn't signed and sealed." Ticket
sales, which "ran in the thousands," may also have been to
blame since "in the 20,000-seat arena, any crowd less than
10,000 would have looked paltry" (MIAMI HERALD, 10/29).
