MLB NEWS & NOTES: SELIG "UPSET" ABOUT SALARY FRENZY

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said he is "upset and
extremely concerned" that player salaries may increase to
unprecedented levels during this year's free-agency period.
On Monday, the Mets signed C Mike Piazza to a seven-year,
$91M deal, making him MLB's highest-paid player. Selig:
"I'm now at the point where I intend to do something about
it. ... I plan to talk to the clubs soon. I won't stand by
and let this happen" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 10/28). After
Piazza's deal, the Mets said they "will soon reveal how much
their ticket prices will increase." Mets Senior VP/Business
Affairs Dave Howard: "I don't think we'll price anybody out
of the market" (Richard Sandomir, N.Y. TIMES, 10/28).
NOTE: President Clinton signed the Curt Flood Act,
which partially lifts MLB's antitrust exemption in regards
to labor relations. It does not apply to relocation, league
expansion or the minor leagues (Mult., 10/28).
