BOWLEN A STRIKE: POLL SHOWS MAJORITY IN FAVOR OF NEW STADIUM

With just over a week to go until Election Day on
November 3, a new poll "suggests that Denver Broncos Owner
Pat Bowlen will get his new publicly-financed NFL Stadium,"
according to Peggy Lowe of the DENVER POST. The poll,
conducted by Ciruli Associates for The Denver Post and local
TV and radio stations, shows that 57% of people living in
the six-county stadium district who are likely to vote say
they support the stadium initiative, compared with 38% who
oppose it and 5% who aren't sure. The poll, conducted last
Monday through Thursday, surveyed 400 registered voters.
The margin of error is +/- 4.9% (DENVER POST, 10/24).
TAGLIABUE A NO-SHOW: In Denver, Adam Schefter reported
that NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue's absence from Sunday's
Broncos-Jaguars game in Denver was a "minor setback" to the
Broncos, "who were hoping to get a surge of momentum" before
election day. Tagliabue was scheduled to speak to several
media outlets, but he remained in N.Y. to attend committee
meetings this morning "as a preamble" to Tuesday's and
Wednesday's owners meetings in K.C. (DENVER POST, 10/24).
ENDORSEMENT: The DENVER POST endorsed the stadium on
Sunday, and said the "small" .1% sales tax extension would
be "offset by a large public benefit (DENVER POST, 10/25).
LEAVING DENVER? In Denver, Peggy Lowe wrote that many
voters feel that Bowlen "will take the team to another city
if they don't give him what he wants." Denver resident Gina
Volpe-Beasley, who will vote for a new stadium: "I truly
feel if we don't vote for it, the Broncos will leave. I
believe they could find another home" (DENVER POST, 10/25).
