LATEST POLLS SUGGESTS PADRES BALLPARK HEADED FOR BIG WIN

A "commanding majority" of San Diego voters plans to
vote for Proposition C, the Padres ballpark measure,
according to a new SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE/NBC-TV poll.
Sixty percent say they support the measure, while 31% plan
to oppose it. The remaining 9% are undecided. The UNION-
TRIBUNE's Gerry Braun writes, "The results indicate that the
opposition campaign has made virtually no headway since
August," when 48% supported the measure and 31% opposed it
in a similar poll. Since then, the Padres have made an
appearance in the World Series and have spent $1M on the
pro-ballpark campaign, while its opposition has spent "only
a few thousand dollars." The survey also found an
"unusually high level of public awareness of the ballpark
debate," as 95% of voters said they knew about Proposition
     C. The survey of 365 likely voters was conducted October 8
     - 17 by the Social Science Research Laboratory at SDSU. It
has a margin of error of +/- 5%. Male voters favored the
measure 67% to 28%, while female voters favored it 52% to
35%. Among those 54 and under, support for the ballpark was
     "better than" 2-to-1 (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/23).
