TIGERS ORDERED TO AWARD $1M TO FAN INJURED AT TIGER STADIUM
Published October 21, 1998
The Tigers "were ordered" to pay $1M to Alyssia
Benejam, whose hand was "permanently disfigured after she
was struck by a shattered bat at a 1994 game," according to
Cecil Angel of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Benejam's attorney
James Elliott argued that the Tigers knew the section
Benejam was sitting in "was unsafe," and have "known about
the problem since at least 1975." Elliott: "The judge said
warning on the back of the ticket didn't apply in this
situation" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/21). Tigers Attorney
John Hoffman: "Tiger Stadium is a safe ballpark. It has
been for 87 years." The Tigers issued a statement that read
in part, "[W]e will be consulting with counsel to see if any
other action is warranted" (DETROIT NEWS, 10/21).
