SENATORS CLAIM TO BE 5TH MOST PROFITABLE TEAM, BEFORE TAXES
Published October 21, 1998
Senators Chair Rod Bryden said that before Canada's
property, sales and entertainment taxes "rip into his club's
bottom line, the Senators are the fifth most profitable
team" in the NHL, according to Chris Stevenson of the OTTAWA
SUN. Bryden said that the only teams to make more money
before taxes than his team are the Rangers, Bruins,
Blackhawks and Red Wings. Bryden: "This is a viable
business and I hope (the tax situation) is going to change
before I run out of money" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/21).
GIVING BACK: Bryden made his remarks while announcing
The Senators Foundation which "will support community and
charitable activities in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec
with cash and various forms of participation" by the team.
Molson Breweries donated C$50,000 to start the foundation,
and Bryden "enlisted a group of community leaders to serve
as its board." Senators Community Development Coordinator
Marie Olney was named Exec Dir (OTTAWA SUN, 10/21).
