Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner "has been in intense
negotiations to sell the Yankees" to Cablevision Chair
Charles Dolan for "what would be the highest price in U.S.
sports history -- perhaps a sum approaching" $1B, according
to Madden, George & Grant of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Dolan
"suggested" that ownership in the team "would be a good
investment for Cablevision," but "refused to characterize or
confirm the status of any talks or price." Dolan: "How
could anyone not be interested in the Yankees?" Calling
Steinbrenner "a winner," Dolan said, "We do need to work out
our future together. And we're really standing by to see
what George wants to do ... we're going to enthusiastically
pursue whatever direction he indicates. If that should turn
out to be that he wants to share equity with us in any way,
we'll want to do that, too" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/15).
SPORTS FAN: In N.Y., Dolan is profiled by the DAILY
NEWS' Tara George. Dolan, on Cablevision's ownership of the
Knicks and NHL Rangers, and interest in the Yankees: "I'm a
sports fan, but our sports involvement is not because of my
enthusiasm for sports per se" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/15).
A FAN, BY GEORGE: In N.Y., Harvey Araton supports
Steinbrenner's continued ownership of the team:
"Steinbrenner may be a windbag but he's our windbag. ...
The Boss isn't about synergy. He has one vision, and that
is the Yankees' prominence" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/15).
