GO EAST: STEELERS CHOOSE DOWNTOWN STADIUM SITE

After several months of study, the Steelers "have
chosen" a site for their new 65,000-seat stadium that
includes the parking lots next to Three Rivers Stadium,
according to Tom Barnes of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE.
Steelers VP & General Counsel Art Rooney II said that the
city's east-side site beat out a west-side site because it
had "slightly more room." Rooney: "The east site is a
little larger, with better orientation toward the river and
more room around the stadium." He added that "another
advantage" of the east site is that no property owned by a
local science center has to be purchased, meaning "less
disruption to its operation." Therefore, the team must only
acquire and demolish one warehouse on the site before it
begins construction on the stadium, currently scheduled to
begin in June '99 and completed by August 2001. HOK will
begin designing the stadium (POST-GAZETTE, 10/15).
