IN-JUSTICE? In Ft. Worth, Johnny Paul writes that
Indians OF/DH David Justice "demanded an apology" from
ESPN's Peter Gammons, for "reporting that the player removed
himself from the lineup" of ALCS Game Five. Justice: "I was
hurt in my heart when I was watching ESPN's 'Baseball
Tonight' and Peter Gammons said that I asked out of the
lineup [Sunday]. I never asked out of the lineup."
Justice: "I feel like he owes me an apology tonight on TV.
If he doesn't, I don't respect the man" (FT. WORTH STAR-
TELEGRAM, 10/13). Gammons reiterated yesterday that he was
misinterpreted. On the 11:00pm ET "SportsCenter" last
night, ESPN's Mark Schwarz examined the controversy and
asked Gammons if he wanted to apologize. Gammons: "It's
hard to apologize for something that wasn't said, but I do
feel very badly that he lost sleep over whatever caused him
the misinterpretation" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 10/12).
SIGNS LANGUAGE: NBC Sports President Ken Schnanzer
"apologized" to Indians Manager Mike Hargrove after Game
Four, when the net broadcast pitching coach Mark Wiley's
conversation with C Einer Diaz and P Dave Burba, revealing
the team's signs. Hargrove and his staff didn't wear mics
for Game Five; NBC "did not argue" (PLAIN DEALER, 10/12).
