GILLETTE SAYS UNSTABLE WORLD MARKETS LED TO EXTENSIVE CUTS

          Gillette will cut 4,700 jobs, or 11% of its work force,
     and "close 26 factories and warehouses to counter falling
     sales," according to Chris Reidy of the BOSTON GLOBE. 
     Gillette said the cutbacks "were prompted in part by
     economic turmoil" in "key overseas markets" in Asia, Russia
     and Brazil.  Gillette also cited "start-up costs associated
     with the recent launch of its Mach3 razor for an anticipated
     decline in third-quarter profits of 20 percent compared with
     the same period last year" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/29).
