BELL CANADA DROPS DON CHERRY, BUT "COACH'S CORNER" GETS AIR

Bell Canada "has pulled the plug" on its sponsorship of
Don Cherry's weekly "Coach's Corner" segment on "Hockey
Night in Canada," according to Marty York of the Toronto
GLOBE & MAIL. Bell, which has sponsored the segment for the
past two NHL seasons, said it will devote its ad dollars on
"HNIC" to "other parts of the broadcast because of its
conclusion that the controversial commentator is perceived
as politically incorrect." Bell's decision comes six months
after it pulled its support from "Coach's Corner" segments
in Quebec, after Cherry made controversial comments
regarding francophones. Since then, Bell said it discovered
that "even some of its Ontario customers have been unhappy
with a number of Cherry's rants." The new sponsor of his
"Coach's Corner" will be Canadian Airlines. Cherry: "That's
fine with me. I love Canadian Airlines. They're a first-
class company. And I'm certainly going to cancel my
subscription with Bell now" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 9/26).
