VANCOUVER ENTERS THE CANADIAN 2010 OLYMPIC BID PROCESS

With the theme, "We Can Do This," Vancouver-Whistler
Olympic bid co-Chair Arthur Griffiths unveiled the city's
plan for the 2010 Winter Olympics "amid smoke and mirrors,"
according to Grant Kerr of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. A
written proposal will be submitted to the Canadian Olympic
Association (COA) on October 15, and following a formal
presentation on November 21, a panel of 77 COA voters will
determine the Canadian site to bid to the IOC. British
Columbia Minister for Small Business Ian Waddell said that
the Vancouver plan includes "asking the federal government"
for C$200M, with C$225M from provincial funds. Griffiths
"figures the 2010 Games will accumulate a legacy" of C$482M
(Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 9/22). Griffiths added that the
C$225M "will be rewarded with incremental tax revenue" of
C$260M "just from hosting the Games" (Van. PROVINCE, 9/22).
THE LUCKIEST ATHLETES IN THE WORLD? Australian-based
Ansell, the official condom supplier of the 2000 Games,
"registered surprise" at the request for 51 condoms per
athlete over the 17-day event. The allocation means three
condoms per athlete a day (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 9/19).
