  • EXECUTIVE TRANSACTIONS

              JULIA LEVERING, the first VP of the USTA, will succeed
         HARRY MARMION as President of the organization.  Marmion
         will remain on the board for two years in the position of
         immediate past President.  Levering was first elected to the
         USTA Board of Dir in '94.  MERVIN HELLER will become first
         VP of the Board (USTA)....The USOC named SCOTT BLACKMUN as
         its General Counsel/Dir of Legal Affairs.  Blackmun had been
         a Managing Partner of the CO-based law firm Hogan & Hartson
         since '94 (USOC)....The 76ers named KAREN FRASCONA Dir of
         Communications.  Frascona served as Associate AD/Media
         Relations at Villanova Univ. (76ers)....The Marketing Arm
         hired GWIN BARR, former SI Sports Marketing Manager, to open
         its office in Charlotte, NC.  Barr will be responsible for
         leveraging corporate sports sponsorship for companies based
         in NC and SC and expanding NASCAR promo involvement (TMA).

              SHAQUILLE O'NEAL is "unofficially" slated to appear on
         NBC's "Saturday Night Live" on October 3 (PHILA. INQUIRER,
         9/17)....MICHAEL O'BRIEN has written "No Ordinary Joe," a
         biography on Penn State Univ. football coach JOE PATERNO. 
         In Philadelphia, Stan Hochman reports that the book, which
         "tries so desperately to mix equal amounts of praise and
         criticism ... winds up stuck in the middle" (PHILADELPHIA
         DAILY NEWS, 9/17)....A daughter of GONE WEST sold for $1.45M
         on Tuesday, "smashing the record price for a filly" at the
         Keeneland September Yearling Sale (AP/Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE,
         9/17)....Director/Producer STEVEN HAHN and co-Producer
         KRISTIN BASH, of WA-based 92 DEGREES FILMWORKS, are filming
         a documentary spotlighting the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds. 
         Filming began at training camp last month and will continue
         throughout the team's 72-game season (SEATTLE TIMES, 9/16).
