EARLY POLL NUMBERS SUPPORTIVE OF PADRES BALLPARK PLAN

A SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE/NBC poll found that 81% of
respondents said their support for the Padres proposed $411M
ballpark "is buoyed by its promise to accelerate urban
renewal in the surrounding neighborhood," even though only
"roughly half" intend to vote in favor of the project,
according to Gerry Braun of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE.
Asked how they intend to vote on the measure, 48% said they
will vote yes, 31% plan to vote no and 21% are undecided.
Voters age 34 and under were more in favor of the ballpark
than voters over 55, but voters between the ages 35 and 54
were the most supportive. Braun writes that the findings
"underscore the wisdom" of the ballpark's ad campaign,
featuring the slogan "It's More Than A Ballpark." Poll Dir
Douglas Coe said that the public "is sold on the benefits"
of the ballpark despite being "skeptical about ballpark
finances and concerned about the future of ticket prices."
The poll found 49% said ticket prices were currently
affordable, 22% said they were not affordable, and 29% had
no opinion. Just 46% believe that tickets at the new
ballpark will be affordable. The survey sampled 605
registered S.D. voters and was conducted via telephone with
     a margin of error of +/- 4% (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/13).
