FINCHEM DISMISSES TALK OF PLAYER UNION, SAYS IT'S NOT NEEDED

The fourth meeting of the "fledgling" Tour Players
Association was attended by close to 50 golfers on Tuesday
in Canada, according to Tim Wharnsby of the TORONTO SUN.
While a group of players -- led by "veterans" Larry Rinker,
Danny Edwards and Mark Brooks -- want a "stronger voice,"
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said he believes the
current system "is responsive and it works." Finchem: "I
don't know how much more democratic our tour can be." Davis
Love III, who is a Tour board member and opposed to the
union, said, "There are probably 10 to 15 guys on that side
and 10 to 15 on the sensible side, the tour side. The rest
of the guys don't care" (TORONTO SUN, 9/10). More Finchem,
on the union: "This business of 'we-they,' there's no place
for it in our sport" (Doug Ferguson, BOSTON GLOBE, 9/10).
