NFL TURNS TO JERRY JONES TO SWEET TALK BROWNS BIDDERS

The NFL "has cut off lobbying of the league's 30 owners
by the seven prospective ownership groups" for the Browns,
according to David Adams of the AKRON BEACON JOURNAL. NFL
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue sent letters to the groups,
"asking that the flurry of phone calls, visits and other
lobbying cease" as of yesterday (BEACON JOURNAL, 8/27).
THE LEAGUE'S TOP COWBOY: In Cleveland, Tony Grossi
reported that the NFL "is providing its best salesman,"
Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones, "to deliver a final pitch on the
worth of the Browns at a special meeting in New York"
Wednesday and today. Each of the seven Browns ownership
candidates will attend separate meetings with Jones at NFL
headquarters, where he "will elaborate on his speculation
that the Browns franchise should fetch a price" of $700-
900M. He "is expected to outline his ideas on increasing
revenue, and thus a franchise's worth, with creative
marketing deals." The Browns candidates' second bids are
due Monday (Tony Grossi, Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 8/26).
