          EDY'S PLACE: Edy's Ice Cream introduced its new flavor,
     "Minnesota Vikings Peanut Butter Blitz," which will soon be
     available in the Twin Cities.  In St. Paul, Greg Johnson
     reports that an Edy's news release says that the new flavor
     "sports Minnesota Vikings blue and yellow colors."  Johnson,
     to Vikings' fans: "So you thought the Vikings' colors were
     purple and gold?" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 8/26)
          GOLF SHOW: In NJ, Yi-Wyn Yen writes that descriptions
     of the PGA Int'l Golf Show, held in Las Vegas, were "Flat. 
     Dead.  Like a senior tour event."  Yen reports that there
     were "numerous notables missing," including Titleist, Cobra,
     Lynx, Spalding, Prince and Bridgestone, and that "a lot of
     new products went unnoticed" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 8/26).  In
     San Diego, T.R. Reinman reported that Callaway's new Big
     Bertha Steelhead metal woods created "no little buzz" at the
     Golf Show.  Reinman: "Perhaps the most significant change
     for consumers [from titanium]: the suggested retail price is
     $285" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/25). 
          NOTES: Animal rights group PETA wrote to General Mills
     President Charles Gaillard, asking that the company "give
     the hook" to an upcoming Wheaties cereal box featuring bass
     fishing champion Denny Brauer.  The group said that "fishing
     is cruel to fish," and PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said
     that "anglers have no place next to real sportsmen like
     Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods" (USA TODAY, 8/26).....NC-
     based Food Lion kicks off its $50M Pick & Win contest today,
     where 50 Pick & Win finalists could win prizes to be awarded
     at the Charlotte NASCAR race on October 4 (Food Lion).
