WITH THREE MILLION IN SIGHT, STEINBRENNER WILL TALK TO BRONX

Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner said he will consider
staying in the Bronx if he can get a new ballpark, according
to Madden, Fitz-Gibbon & Goldiner of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS.
Steinbrenner: "I promised [Bronx Borough President Fernando
Ferrer] if we drew 3 million, I'd sit down with him. Not to
stay, not to leave, but to have discourse. I promised that,
and I'll live up to that. But I still don't like him."
More Steinbrenner: "We're not talking about just a
renovation. The stadium needs to be totally rebuilt."
Going into yesterday, the Yankees needed to average 38,000
for its remaining 26 home games to hit three million (N.Y.
DAILY NEWS, 8/16). The Yankees' four-game series with the
     Rangers drew 203,803, "the third-largest, four-date
attendance in the 23-year history of the revamped Yankee
Stadium." The Yankees now have drawn 2,077,870 fans and are
currently "on pace to draw 2.97 million" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/17).
