BREAKING AWAY? SPURS' QUARRY SITE PERFECT FOR CUTTERS?

The Spurs "are willing" to pay $20M to $40M to help
build a new arena "touted by local developers," according to
Christopher Anderson of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. City
Councilmember Jeff Webster, who represents the area where an
abandoned quarry is "envisioned as a retail and
entertainment development with an arena as its prime
attraction, said the proposal is promising." Webster said
the Spurs told him they could contribute up to $40M toward a
city-owned facility, but Spurs VP Leo Gomez declined to
discuss a dollar amount. Mayor Howard Peak said the arena
plan, promoted by the team and "conceived" by real estate
company Bitterblue, is "worth sending to the council."
After the council views the plan, a 60-day public review can
begin, then a vote can be made to approve or deny the
project. Peak termed the quarry proposal "serious" and said
that it is the "only deal on the table" (EXPRESS NEWS,8/12).
