OLYMPIC NOTES: IOC LOOKS FOR WAYS TO COMBAT DOPING

An unscheduled meeting of the IOC Executive Board will
convene August 20 in Lausanne, Switzerland, the "single
subject: fighting doping in sports," according to Mike
Gorrell of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. The conference is
supposed to "develop a clear definition of doping and to try
to develop a more unified and simplified set of medical
codes that apply to all sports" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 8/9). A
editorial in Sunday's N.Y. TIMES stated that the IOC "does a
far more effective job of policing drug use than other
athletic federations," but that "it must do even better."
It added that IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch's "own
commitment to the cause is suspect," and suggested the IOC
"spend serious money on the problem" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/9).
NOTES: USOC Exec Dir Dick Schultz, who sits on the
Coordinating Commission for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney,
was recently named to the IOC's Coordinating Commission for
the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. In CO, Mike Spence wrote
that Schultz's roles put him "in the thick of preparations
for the Sydney and Athens Games." USOC VP Paul George was
named to the IOC committee that will study bid proposals for
the 2006 Winter Games (CO Springs GAZETTE-TELEGRAPH, 8/9).
...Weekend profiles of local organizing committee chairs of
the 2012 Games included John Morton, volunteer Chair of the
     Washington-Baltimore Regional 2012 Coalition. Morton: "I
have a passion for seeing us win this" (Baltimore SUN, 8/9).
In Houston, John Williams reported that George DeMontrond,
who recently "assumed point" on Houston's efforts to win the
2012 Summer Games, said, "Houston has a real good chance to
win this thing" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/8).
