FENWAY LAND BOUGHT, WILL IT PUT A CRAMP IN RED SOX'S PLANS?

A parcel of Fenway land "coveted" by the Red Sox for
their ballpark plans is being "bought by a prominent Boston-
based shopping center developer, who says he has no interest
in building a ballpark," according to Jack Meyers of the
BOSTON HERALD. Steve Samuels, the developer of the South
Bay Center shopping complex, said he has a deal to buy four
parcels between Brookline Avenue and Boylston Street, "the
ostensible centerpiece" of the team's ballpark site.
Samuels "denied" that the transaction was a "speculative
venture aimed at cashing in on the Red Sox's plans." Meyers
wrote that the purchase "could dramatically affect" the
team's planning efforts for a new stadium close to Fenway
Park, "either by boxing the team out of its primary site,
raising the price tag on a new facility or putting a new
'partner' in the picture" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/10).
