JONES DENIES REPORT HE HELPED BROKER A PAYOFF FOR IRVIN

          Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones "disputed a story" in
     yesterday's Dallas Morning News that "he helped broker a
     payoff" from WR Michael Irvin to G Everett McIver, according
     to Clarence Hill of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM.  Jones: "I
     know of no agreement involving our club" (FT. WORTH STAR-
     TELEGRAM, 8/10).  Hubbuch & Taylor reported Sunday that
     Jones had brokered a "high six figures" deal so that McIver
     "would neither pursue criminal charges against Irvin nor
     publicly discuss details" of a training camp incident, which
     left him with a "deep cut to his neck."  Cowboys officials,
     coaches and players have been told "not to discuss the
     incident with the media" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/9).
