          MIKE TYSON will ask the state of NJ for a boxing
     license today in a hearing.  A decision is not expected
     today, as the board will have 45 days to decide whether
     Tyson will be reinstated (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/29)....In
     N.Y., Neal Travis reports that The Marquee Group CEO BOB
     GUTKOWSKI, who has signed the U.S. WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM to a
     representation deal, took the team out to New York's Mangia
     e Bevi Restaurant the night before their 2-0 gold medal win
     against China (N.Y. POST, 7/29)....JOHNNY BENCH has joined
     the Senior PGA Tour and makes his debut this week at the
     Gillette Tour Challenge in UT (Mult., 7/29)....SUEDDEUTSCHE
     ZEITUNG reported that German officials are investigating
     BORIS BECKER on suspicion that he "evaded taxes on millions
     of dollars in earnings."  Agents searched offices of friends
     and sponsors (Mult., 7/29)....ROD LAVER, who suffered a
     stroke on Monday, "was conscious and off the critical list"
     yesterday at UCLA Medical Center.  Dr. Neil Martin said
     Laver is "definitely not paralyzed," but added he "is not
     out of the woods yet" (AP/Mult., 7/29)....DALE EARNHARDT has
     a "small role" in "BASEketball," a new movie from the
     creators of "Airplane!" which opens Friday.  Other cameos
     include BOB COSTAS and KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR (CHARLOTTE
     OBSERVER, 7/29).......News Corp. said in a statement
     yesterday that ownership and control of the company will not
     be affected by the pending divorce of Chair RUPERT MURDOCH
     and his wife ANNA (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/29).
