WITH DEADLINE OFF, DON HAS REASON TO BE SMILEYING TODAY

Marlins President Don Smiley "is no longer working
under a deadline" to buy the club from Owner Wayne Huizenga,
according to Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. Smiley "is
still short" of Huizenga's $165M asking price, and a source
told Jackson that the deal "might not be completed for a few
weeks." But one "top-level" Huizenga official said that
Huizenga is "now inclined" to sell to Smiley "even if he
does not meet the asking price." A representative for NY
businessman James Capra, whose daughter works in the
Marlins' communications department, said yesterday that
Capra "is seriously considering" joining Smiley's bid group,
and "might invest in the $10[M] range" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/29).
BACARDI'S SUNRISE PARK? In Ft. Lauderdale, Alan Snel
reports that a Bacardi spokesperson said "there's no truth
to the rumor" that the company is interested in a naming
rights deal to help finance Marlins bidder/agent Joe Cubas'
stadium plan (Ft. Lauderdale SUN SENTINEL, 7/29).
