TEMPERS RISING IN CHICAGO OVER BEARS FUTURE STADIUM PLANS

Angered by "accusations of foot-dragging made by Bears
President Michael McCaskey," Chicago Mayor Richard Daley
"slammed the door on construction of a new stadium in
Chicago and demanded that the Bears make a decision on his
offer of a lease extension tied to a Soldier Field
renovation," according to Spielman & Beaupre of the CHICAGO
SUN-TIMES. Over the weekend, McCaskey "accused the city of
stalling potential negotiations on a new lease." But
yesterday, Edward Bedore, who is leading Daley's stadium
talks, said, "Chicago would love to have the Bears stay at a
rehabilitated Soldier Field ... but, at some point, Mr.
McCaskey has to get serious and make up his mind what he
wants to do. This has dragged on entirely too long."
Meanwhile, Elk Groove Village Mayor Craig Johnson also
"pushed the Bears to make a decision" about that suburban
site. Johnson: "Ours is not an ultimatum, but we're letting
(the Bears) know. ... the ball's in your court, and you've
got to decide what you want to do" (CHI. SUN-TIMES, 7/29).
