The sale process for the Royals "is heating up again,
and a couple of insiders are suggesting that Royals
directors could make a decision within a couple weeks,"
according to Charles Crumpley of the K.C. STAR. Crumpley:
"It's still a toss-up as to what the Royals directors will
decide. The three most likely possibilities, according to
various insiders: selling the team to a group led by Miles
Prentice; selling to a group led by Lamar Hunt and Western
Resources Inc.; or spiking the sale and starting anew next
year. It appears now that the most remote possibilities
include selling the team to a mystery buyer or to a group
led by Bobby and George Brett." Prentice's bid "appears to
have good prospects." The N.Y. lawyer and minor-league team
owner "submitted what has been reported as the highest bid.
And he has impressed the Royals and the investment bankers
with what some described as professionalism and
persistence." On the other hand, "the Royals have made it
clear that his bid needs to be shored up, and he
particularly lacks big-name Kansas Citians in his group."
The Hunt-Western Resources bid "reportedly is lower than
Prentice's," with insiders saying it was less than $50M,
"although that was neither confirmed nor denied by others in
the group" (Charles Crumpley, K.C. STAR, 7/25).
