FAST CARS HIT THE STREET: TWO MUTUAL FUNDS EYE NASCAR STOCKS

NC-based StockCar Stocks Index Fund, a "no-load mutual
fund" that invests in companies either profiting from or
sponsoring NASCAR, is profiled by Robert Barker of BUSINESS
WEEK. Registering with the SEC, StockCar Stocks will invest
in "about 50 stocks," including sponsors Procter & Gamble,
McDonald's and GM, in addition to purer plays such as ISC.
Baker reports that from '92-97, StockCar would have "just
outpaced" Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, with total
returns of 250.7%, vs. 242.6%. Another motorsports fund,
NC-based The Motorsports Associated Growth & Income Fund,
began in June as a 5.75%-load offering. But through July
15, it was "down" 4.4% (BUSINESS WEEK, 8/3 issue). The
Motorsports Associated Growth & Income Fund was examined by
Melissa Preddy of the DETROIT NEWS. Pegasus VP Wes Beroth,
whose company set up the fund, said they obtained more than
5,000 names of people requesting info on the fund after they
set up a booth in Daytona at a mall across from the track.
Beroth: "And a lot of brokers have called to inquire about
selling the fund" (DETROIT NEWS, 7/26).
NEW SYMBOL: CART announced that its NYSE stock ticker
symbol will change to MPH, effective today (CART).
