NEW POLL BREAKS DOWN N.Y. FAN SUPPORT: ARE ISLES STRANDED?

A poll conducted last month for Newsday by Hofstra Univ. found that a vast majority of people in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties reject the idea of using public money to help build new homes for the Islanders, Yankees or Mets, according to Fresco, Cehn & Janison of NEWSDAY. The poll also found that Long Islanders, by a 4-to-1 ratio, and Queens residents, by 6-to-1, do not want the Yankees to move to Manhattan. Asked if they favor public funds to help build a new ballpark for the Mets in Queens, 29.6% of Long Islanders said Yes, 63.6% said No, while 24% of Queens residents said Yes and 67.4% said No. As for public funds to help build a new arena for the Isles, 34.3% of L.I. residents said Yes, 58.7% said No, while 19.5% of Queens residents voted Yes, and 69.2% said No. The poll of 805 adult Long Island residents and 616 adult Queens residents was taken by phone June 5-26. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.5% for Long Island and +/-4% for Queens (NEWSDAY, 7/26). The poll also surveyed fan support (NEWSDAY, 7/26).
