READY TO RIDE, MINOR LEAGUE HOCKEY TEAM GETS SOME SPURS!

The Spurs yesterday reached a definitive purchase
agreement with San Antonio attorney J. Scott Rose for the
rights to acquire a WPHL team. The WPHL club does not plan
on playing during the '98-99 season (WPHL). WPHL Dir of PR
Steve Cherwonak said plans are to "continue to work toward
securing a suitable venue for the 1999-2000 season." In San
Antonio, Tom Orsborn reports it is "not apparent ... where
and when a Spurs-owned WPHL team could play." The IHL
Dragons, who are seeking to move to the CHL, have one year
left on their lease with Freeman Coliseum, and Alamodome Dir
Mike Abington said "no one from the Spurs" has called him
recently to discuss the possibility of a WPHL team playing
at the dome (Tom Orsborn, SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 6/22).
