USA TODAY AD TRACK SHOWS MJ NOT ALONE IN SELLING PRODUCT

USA TODAY lists the 13 sports-related TV advertisements
it has reviewed since it began its "Ad Track" in '95, and
Melanie Wells reports that while a '95 McDonald's spot
starring Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Looney Tunes
characters "tops the chart as the most effective athlete-
flecked campaign," other non-Jordan ads "got higher scores
for likability," including a '95 Nike spot starring Drew
Bledsoe and Marshall Faulk. Nike's debut campaign for Tiger
Woods in which he "attacks racism in golf" was the second-
most popular sports-star campaign and ranked third among the
most effective. Among the least likable and effective spots
were Reebok's Emmitt Smith Olympic-themed campaign in '96,
Right Guard deodorant spots featuring Charles Barkley and
Scottie Pippen in '97 and a '98 American Express campaign
featuring Tiger Woods (USA TODAY, 7/13).
