BRONX'S FERNANDO FERRER HAS PLAN TO KEEP YANKEES IN BOROUGH

Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer wants the city
of N.Y. to "guarantee" three million admissions a year at
Yankee Stadium, and he "is proposing the city buy any
tickets needed" to reach that mark, and "distribute them
free through youth groups and the Board of Education,"
according to Robert Hardt of the N.Y. POST. On Wednesday,
Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner said he would consider
staying in the Bronx if the team three million in attendance
this season and had similar guarantees to hit that number in
the future. Using last year's final attendance figure of
2.58 million, Hardt calculates that NYC "would have shelled
out approximately" $6.8M last year if such a plan had been
in place. Ferrer: "Instead of spending [$1B] or more on a
Manhattan stadium, this would be relatively cheap and create
a whole new generation of fans" (N.Y. POST, 7/10).
