CASEY'S CART-WARMING STORY GRABBING PRE-OPEN HEADLINES

Casey Martin and his use of a golf cart are dominating
the pre-tournament headlines at the U.S. Open, which begins
tomorrow at S.F.'s Olympic Club. The USGA decided to allow
Martin "to use a regular cart" during play after he
"continued to have mechanical difficulties with his
specially designed one-seat cart." Martin played a practice
round at Olympic yesterday with former Stanford teammates
Tiger Woods and Joel Kriebel, with a "[l]arge gallery"
following the threesome (Clifton Brown, N.Y. TIMES, 6/17).
Also in N.Y., Luke Cyphers writes that Martin has become a
"fan favorite" (N.Y DAILY NEWS, 6/17). In Orlando, Larry
Guest writes that golf officials and traditionalists "can
sneer all they want" at Martin and his cart, "[b]ut a judge
and a rather sizeable portion of the public have declared
themselves in the Casey Camp" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/17).
