The X Games begin June 19 in San Diego and ESPN will provide nearly 40 hours of event programming, along with publicity for the city over the course of the 10-day event, according to Caitlin Rother of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. About 450 athletes will compete in the alternative sports competition -- events "geared primarily toward young, TV- watching males but also drawing whole families to view the action in person" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/10). THE X FILES: ESPN will use Princeton Video Image's (PVI) L-VIS system during the X Games. Fourteen of the event's sponsors are scheduled to use PVI's system, including Mountain Dew, Taco Bell, AT&T, Chevy S-10 Pick- up/Pontiac Sunfire, Snickers/Starburst, Pringles, the U.S. Marines, Visa, Touchstone Pictures' Armageddon, AC Delco, Lee Jeans, Sony Corp., Sony Electronics and Speed Stick Ultimate (PVI)....ESPN will use SporTVision Systems' AIRf/x technology during the Games to calculate elevation achieved by in-line skaters, bikers and skateboarders (THE DAILY).
