Talks "are underway" in Las Vegas to open a casino
based on Petersen Publishing's Hot Rod magazine. The idea
is "to see if Vegas can do for drag racing what it did for
boxing," as the casino would be built trackside to a racing
strip." Petersen officials said that there is "no deal
yet," but confirmed that "discussions with Vegas interests
are revving up" (Michael Shain, N.Y. POST, 6/7)....A crowd
"in excess of 50,000 is expected" for Saturday's Oscar De La
Hoya-Patrick Charpentier fight at the Sun Bowl. Ticket
prices for Saturday's fight start at $35, and promoter Bob
Arum said the stadium may open up 10,000 more seats at "a
mere $20 a pop" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 6/7).
