San Antonio businessman Red McCombs said yesterday that
he's "leaning toward making a bid" to purchase the Vikings,
according to Charley Walters of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS.
McCombs said it his "inclination" that he "will make a bid,"
adding "[t]he only reason I'm saying 'leaning' is that
something could happen between now and [the deadline of]
July 1." He said that he hasn't decided on an amount if he
bids, and "reiterated he would keep the team in Minnesota"
should his bid be accepted. McCombs said that if his bid
fails, he "clearly is interested in acquiring a franchise
for San Antonio" in the proposed NBC/Turner league.
McCombs: "[I]f something happens that I am not successful
with the Vikings, then I would be very interested in looking
at this new league for San Antonio. But I don't want that
to confuse the issue. ... The NFL is my priority" (ST. PAUL
PIONEER PRESS, 5/29).
ROGER, ROGER? Walters also reports that Vikings
President Roger Headrick "wouldn't respond to a rumor" that
Birmingham, AL, orthopedist Larry Lemak "has pulled out of"
Headrick's ownership group (PIONEER PRESS, 5/29).
