NFL TELLS BRONCOS TO EAS UP ON SPONSORING SUPPLEMENT

CO-based Experimental and Applied Sciences, a sports
nutrition company, "is in hot water with the NFL for one of
its supplements and its involvement with several" Broncos
players, according to Alex Marvez of the ROCKY MOUNTAIN
NEWS. The NFL said Wednesday that Broncos players will not
be allowed to wear EAS merchandise on game days during the
upcoming season because it violates the league's licensing
agreement. That includes postgame interviews, where EAS
gained "significant exposure" during the '97 playoffs from
such players as Bill Romanowski and Shannon Sharpe, two EAS
endorsers along with fellow Broncos Terrell Davis and John
Elway. The NFL also issued a memo to all teams warning
about the use of Andro-6, an EAS supplement that boosts
testosterone levels while reportedly increasing strength and
muscle mass. The NFL found two ingredients in Andro-6 that
are "in violation" of its drug-testing policy. EAS CEO Bill
Phillips said he "couldn't care less" about the NFL's ban on
players wearing EAS' logo: "We market on information, not on
EAS logos on hats" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 5/28).
