NIKE AND ADIDAS BOTH MOVE TO GET WORKERS OUT OF INDONESIA

Nike has flown out "about" 130 employees and their
families from "embattled Jakarta," while adidas evacuated 51
of its people on Saturday, according to Jeff Manning of the
Portland OREGONIAN. Both companies took the employees and
their families to nearby Singapore. Manning added that
despite the rioting and looting in Jakarta, neither adidas
nor Nike has suffered any interruption in footwear
production. While the factories are running, "transporting
shoes has become a problem," as subcontractors must truck
the finished shoes through streets "strewn with debris and
sometimes closed altogether." Indonesia produces about 25%
of adidas' shoes and 29% of Nike's (OREGONIAN, 5/19).
