THE SPORTS AUTHORITY EXECS COME UP EMPTY ON BONUSES

FL-based The Sports Authority (TSA) "paid no bonuses"
to its top execs in '97, "a year in which the sporting-goods
retailer failed to meet financial goals and saw its shares
fall while the overall market rose," according to a report
in the Fort Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL. For TSA Chair & CEO
Jack Smith that meant a pay package worth $655,938 last year
compared to a '96 package worth $2.31M. President Richard
Lynch Jr. did not receive a bonus after earning one worth
more than $230,000 in '96. Excluding one-time charges
related to closing three stores, TSA reported net income of
$25.3M for the year ended January 25, compared with $30M for
     the period a year earlier (SUN-SENTINEL, 4/28).
NEW STORE: TSA GM/Canadian Operations Mark Hulme said
that a new TSA outlet will open in October just north of
Toronto. It will be the company's first new store in Canada
since opening six in '95 and '96 (FINANCIAL POST, 4/28).
