EL NINO TAKES A HIT ON FINAL CACTUS LEAGUE ATTENDANCE

The addition of the D'Backs and the White Sox helped
increase total attendance for the Cactus League 14% in '98,
up to 904,224, according to Paola Boivin of the ARIZONA
REPUBLIC. But the average attendance for the teams that
played last season was down 9.5% from '97. Cactus League
President Jerry Geiger attributed the drop in attendance to
the presence of the D'Backs in AZ and to the poor spring
weather. Only the Brewers showed an increase in home
attendance in '98, up 4.2% from '97. Seven teams showed
decreases and two -- the Rockies and Cubs -- had percentage
drops reach double figures. But the Cubs still averaged the
highest Cactus League attendance for the season with 8,396.
The D'Backs averaged 6,659 per game (AZ REPUBLIC, 4/25).
