MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

In FL, Randy Guinto was awarded $1M by a Miami-Dade
jury, after suing contest sponsors the NHL Panthers, Coca-
Cola and Blockbuster Entertainment, after the team ruled his
120-foot promotional shot during a game in '94 "hadn't quite
made it into the net." An attorney for the contest sponsors
said the companies had not decided whether to appeal (Ft.
Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 4/18)....In Ontario, local car
dealer Paul Sadlon took out a full-page ad in Saturday's
Toronto Sun in response to Bell Canada's decision to drop
its sponsorship of Don Cherry's "Coaches Corner" in Quebec.
Sandlon said he was "ashamed of Bell Canada" for pulling its
sponsorship, and added, "Come on Bell Canada -- get with it
and cut the B.S." (TORONTO SUN, 4/19)....USA TODAY's Michael
Hiestand writes that Magic Johnson's new spot for AmEx
"shows how far his image has come since he was diagnosed
with HIV years ago, leaving some assuming his ad career was
over" (USA TODAY, 4/20).....USA TODAY's Ad Track, which
reviewed 14 ad campaigns since January, showed that Tiger
Woods' spot for AmEx was liked "a lot" by 17% of
respondents, and was termed "very effective" by 22% of
respondents, ranking in the top half of the survey. USA
TODAY's Dottie Enrico says that the spots earned "slightly
better marks with affluent consumers" (USA TODAY, 4/20).
