DO TORONTO'S TROUBLES LIE WITHIN FOR 2008 OLYMPIC BID?

The Canadian Olympic Association (COA) Friday approved
Toronto's bid for the $2.3B 2008 Summer Olympic Games,
according to Don Wanagas of the TORONTO SUN. IOC President
Juan Antonio Samaranch met with Toronto officials Friday and
"came away with a positive impression" (TORONTO SUN 4/19).
The COA voted 58-2 in favor of Toronto hosting the Games.
The host city will be named in September 2001. In Toronto,
Infantry & Starkman reported that a "power struggle has been
going on behind the scenes," with the COA "trying to retain
as much control as possible" over BidCo., the private group
leading the bid so far, which is chaired by former Toronto
Mayor David Crombie (TORONTO STAR, 4/18). Starkman wrote
that the struggle is "all about power -- and who's going to
control the bid" (Randy Starkman, TORONTO STAR, 4/19).
