DON CHERRY TOO TART FOR BELL CANADA'S QUEBEC DIVISION

Bell Canada's Quebec division has stopped sponsoring
Don Cherry's "Coach's Corner," accusing him of using his
role on CBC's "Hockey Night In Canada" to utter "gross
statements" about francophones, according to Sandro Contenta
of the TORONTO STAR. Bell Canada's Quebec spokesperson
Julie Lavoie said that the decision came after "a dozen Bell
customers complained about Cherry." Lavoie: "As a company,
we didn't want to be associated with a show where gross
statements are made about francophones, who make up a
majority of our clients in Quebec." Cherry had no comment.
The sponsorship, which consisted of flashing the Bell logo
during Coach's Corner, was removed last week (TORONTO STAR,
4/16). Bell Canada will continue to sponsor Cherry's show
outside of Quebec (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 4/16).
