REEBOK'S FIREMAN GETS 60% RAISE AFTER "SOME" GOALS ARE MET

Reebok Int'l President & CEO Paul Fireman's pay "rose"
60% to $1.6M, including his first bonus since '94, after the
company "reached some, but not all, of its financial goals,"
according to BLOOMBERG NEWS. Fireman's salary went from $1M
to $1.04M, he received a $562,500 bonus, as well as 111,150
stock options worth $7.26M in 10 years, "assuming the stock's
price rises" 10% a year. He was awarded 500,000 options in
'96. Some analysts said that Reebok's '97 performance
"didn't merit an increase in pay," as earnings fell 2.8%.
Thomas Berg of Laidlaw Global Securities: "It's totally
inappropriate." Fireman's maximum bonus was to equal 100% of
his base salary, "depending on whether he met certain goals
for cash flow, pretax profit and total orders." The company
"only exceeded" cash flow (BLOOMBERG NEWS/N.Y. POST, 3/28).
