MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

CALLAWAY SNARES BUFFET: SI's "Golf Plus" reports that,
after Bill Gates, Warren Buffett "is said to be Callaway's
next TV pitchman" (SI, 3/16). Gates' image makeover,
including his Callaway Golf commercial, was examined by
NBC's Lisa Kim. Kim: "Some say this new ad for Callaway is
well-timed to offset a recent run of bad publicity." Diaz
Schloss Publicist Frank Diaz said, "What this does is it
really humanizes him. There [are] probably 25 million
golfers out there, and I think they can relate to how
frustrating it is and how humbling it is to try to hit that
little ball." Ad Age's Bob Garfield: "Big win for Callaway.
Big win for Microsoft" ("News with Brian Williams," 3/12).
AD NOTE: In Chicago, George Lazarus: "Look for General
Mills Inc. to announce that Tiger Woods has been signed up
as a spokesman for Wheaties" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/13).
