PEROT HOPING FOR 2000 ARENA OPENING, BUT MAKING NO PROMISES

          Mavs Owner Ross Perot Jr. said yesterday that he "still
     hopes" to complete the team's new arena by fall 2000, "but
     he gave indications that might not happen," according to
     Robert Ingrassia of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS.  Perot said
     that a fall 2000 ribbon cutting "is a very ambitious goal,"
     and added "time will not drive this project - quality will." 
     Officials had "mentioned" the fall 2000 date during the
     recent arena campaign "but have been careful not to bind
     themselves to a specific construction schedule" (DALLAS
     MORNING NEWS, 3/12).  Perot said that he has interviewed
     "several" architects and "hopes to have a design team in
     place in the next 60 days" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 3/12).
