POLICY SAYS 49ERS NOT FOR SALE; STADIUM FINANCING QUESTIONED

49ers President Carmen Policy "said Friday that team is
not for sale -- at this time -- despite the ongoing feud
between sibling owners Eddie DeBartolo and Denise DeBartolo
York," according to Sam Farmer of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS.
Policy: "I have not been advised if there's any interest or
desire to pursue the review of a sale." NFL VP/
Communications Greg Aiello said the league has not been
informed of a possible team sale (MERCURY NEWS, 2/21).
SALES TAX NOT ENOUGH: In S.F., Chuck Finnie reported
that "financial documents and those involved in the project"
say that sales tax generated by the proposed shopping mall
at Candlestick Point "would fall far short" of the money
needed to pay off the city's share of constructing a new
stadium for the 49ers. Even if the proposed mall matches
the performance of the developer's most profitable mall in
FL, sales tax would come up $2.2M short of the $7.3M the
city will need each year to pay off voter-approved bonds for
the stadium. The gap "threatens" S.F. Mayor Willie Brown's
"promise to voters that the stadium-mall would pay for
itself, and presents yet another obstacle to the project,
already delayed amid potential criminal charges against"
Eddie DeBartolo (Chuck Finnie, S.F. EXAMINER, 2/22).
