SAMARANCH TICKED, TICKED, TICKED OVER "60 MINUTES" PROFILE

IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch claims that he was
"blindsided" by CBS reporter Bob Simon during an interview
for CBS's "60 Minutes," according to the AP's Larry Siddons.
Simon asked Samaranch "about his role in the fascist regime
of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco and some touchy Olympic
questions." Samaranch, who said he never heard of "60
Minutes," before last week, said, "I was really
disappointed, because I feel like I was in an ambush."
Samaranch asked Westinghouse Chair Michael Jordan for a
"chance to redo the interview" in Spanish, his native
language, but as of Sunday, CBS had "not agreed to redo" the
interview. The "segment was originally set to run Sunday,
but was pushed back" to the last day of the Games on
February 22 (AP, 2/17). In N.Y., Richard Huff reports that
CBS said it "has no intentions to redo" the interview. A
"60 Minutes" spokesperson said, "If his English wasn't good
enough, he should have had a translator. He speaks perfect
English in our piece" (Richard Huff, N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/17).
